A Sound That Follows A Silence

Dir. Hannah Chloe Tasker

A Sounds That Follows A Silence was made over one Summer; but came about over the space of 6 years. From “it” happening; to talking to ranting to writing; to thinking visually; to finding the means to express “it” in some sort of way that worked (at least for me)... It was a quick process in the end, but only because it sat on the shoulders of years of trying to figure “it” out - and still not quite being able to.

It is not a tale of total sadness however. In fact, not at all. It is mainly one of love. Of happiness and laughing and intricacies and intimacy and understanding and allowing. I’m sure for a lot of people, making a film with their mother is akin to a nightmare - but luckily for me (for us) it went some way to healing.

My grandmother, her daughter, and me. Some things never seem to change.

Trigger warning: mention of rape; sexual assault and death/dying

Meet the director: Hannah Tasker

Hannah Tasker is a 23 year old filmmaker, originally from Nottingham and now - attempting to afford - residing in London. Having finished studying for their English BA in August 2020, with nothing other than a “1 second everyday” film under their belt, and no alternative way of feasibly staying in the ol’ smoke; they undertook an MA in Visual Anthropology at Goldsmiths. Here they remembered why they love learning; making a couple of films as exercises (a few of which are acceptable viewing) as well as their final film A Sound That Follows A Silence (ASTFAS), all whilst getting to study, read, and write anthropologically. Since this, they have premiered the short film Picking Up On Things at BFI Future Film Festival 2022 and ASTFAS in Riga’s Anthropological Film Festival. They have continued to work at a music venue, collaborate with South London Film School, pick up bits and bobs, tried to keep up with everyone and everything and found this hard; and for the future? Well... there’s a thing or two brewing. Hopefully they’ll get made.
